Near Vision Test  Color Vision Test

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) Test

* Please note that these tests or any other vision tests found on the internet can not replace a comprehensive examination by an Optometrist.  These tests are merely guides, NOT exams.  A complete professional eye exam is essential in diagnosing conditions or diseases not mentioned here.  An eye care professional can also diagnose systemic conditions which influences the health of your entire body.

An Optometrist thoroughly examines the visual function of your eyes and any visual impairment which you may or may not know you have.  In addition, he/she can detect early signs of systemic diseases including hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, stroke and other conditions by examining the health of your eyes.  The American Optometric Association recommends a professional eye examination once per year.

Distance Vision Test

  • Please note that since there are variations in computer displays & resolution, it is important that this test be printed out rather than simply viewed on your screen.

  • Print out this eye chart and post it in a well lit area.  You may wish to keep this chart as a self-monitoring tool to keep around your house for you and your family.

      Instructions

  • Click on the above link to get to the eye chart.

  • On the new browser that is opened, click File -> Print or simply press Control + P to print out the chart.

  • Note:  If you do not wish your chart to have any header or footer text at the top and bottom of the page, then click File -> Page Setup and delete everything in the Header and Footer boxes.

  • If you wear glasses or contact lenses, put them on.

  • Standing 10 feet away, read the lines, first covering one eye at a time and then with both eyes.

  • Seeing well with both eyes does not necessarily mean that each eye is working properly.  That is why it is important to test one eye at a time.

  • You must be able to read line 5 (which is 20/40 vision) in order to pass the vision screening of a DMV driver's license test in the state of California.  (Other states have similar guidelines.  See your state's DMV website for details.)

  • Line 8 is the standard for normal 20/20 vision.

  • If you have trouble reading this line or any line above that, then you may need your vision corrected.

  • Please see your Eye Care Professional and request a comprehensive exam.

  • If you can read line 9, then congratulations!  You have 20/15 vision which is better than 20/20 vision and not everyone can attain this level.

 Near Vision Test

  • Please note that since not everyone uses the same monitor nor the same resolution, it is important that this test be printed out rather than simply viewed on your screen.

  • Print out this near-point chart and post it in a well lit area.  First click on the link, then print it by clicking File -> Print on the new browser that opens up or simply press Control + P.

  • If you wear glasses or contact lenses, put them on.

  • Hold the near-point chart approximately 14-16 inches from your face.

  • If you have trouble reading the last line (line 20) on the chart then you may need your vision corrected.

  • Please see your Eye Care Professional and request a comprehensive exam.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) Test

An Amsler Grid is used to self-monitor vision for evidence of distortion or small blind spots in the central visual field.  Periodic viewing of this grid may help detect any changes in vision, which can potentially be very harmful.  As with any disease, early detection is vital.

You may perform this test either on your monitor or print out a copyPrint it by clicking File -> Print or simply press Control + P on the new browser that is opened.  It is recommended that you print out a copy anyway as future reference to use as a self-monitoring tool.  Note, this nor any of the tests on this page do not replace an eye exam.
  • If you wear reading glasses or contact lenses, put them on.

  • At normal reading distance, cover one eye at a time and look at the center spot.

  • The lines of the grid should appear normal.  You should see a black spot in the center.  If any lines appear distorted, broken, or missing or if the black spot is missing, please see your Eye Care Professional immediately.
